The brick building of Chicago Fire Department Engine co. 42 was built in 1887, after the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, the biggest city fire in history. It’s one of the old historic firehouses of the city that has been abandoned for decades, so I decided to retire ‘him’ entirely: he’ll spend his days soaking his legs in the shallow waters of a pond in the Great Lake Region :). I thought the sophisticated elegance of the whooping cranes fits the beautiful architectural details of the building.
