fidelio-opera-poster-ludwig-van-beethoven
Minimalist poster design for Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio (Leonore).
Fidelio (originally titled Leonore, oder Der Triumph der ehelichen Liebe – The Triumph of Marital Love) is Beethoven’s only opera.
It tells a story of personal sacrifice, heroism and eventual triumph above injustice, with a strong moral – these are important topics of Beethoven’s personal views.
The setting (a political prison) is pretty unusual for an opera: Leonore – disguised as a prison guard named Fidelio – rescues her husband’s (Florestan) life who’s imprisoned by his political enemy, Don Pizarro.
The sheet music at the bottom of the poster is from Rocco’s (the warden of the prison) aria ‘Hat man nicht auch Gold’.
